Pedal United: Promote Inclusive Active Travel
Multilingual Cycle Train-the-Trainer Programme
Supported by Paths for All Community Fund 2024

Pedal United is delighted to share the outcomes of our 2024 community cycling initiative, supported by Paths for All. We have helped hundreds of people from diverse backgrounds connect with Glasgow, build confidence, and participate more fully in local life through active travel.

Our work focused on reducing cultural and linguistic barriers, enabling new arrivals and ethnic minority residents to experience the physical, social, and emotional benefits of cycling. The programme created opportunities for meaningful interaction, outdoor activity, and community leadership in a welcoming and supportive environment.

In 2024, we delivered 87 cycling activities and engaged 226 participants, with 509 attendances from a wide range of cultural backgrounds. The high level of repeat attendance demonstrates strong engagement, trust, and community satisfaction.

A key achievement of this project was increasing the number of community members who now feel confident taking on leadership roles around cycling and active travel. Through our capacity-building approach, we:

  • supported a new group of multilingual volunteers

  • enabled community members to take ownership of cycling activities

  • created a sustainable network of leaders who can support others

The programme developed 22 new multilingual community cycling leaders and cycle trainers. Many volunteers now independently assist with or lead community rides and cycling-related sessions in different settings across Glasgow, including:

  • supporting a cycle research project led by University of Glasgow;

  • supporting cycle activities in prison;

  • contributing to initiatives aimed at improving wellbeing, inclusion, and sustainable travel

This demonstrates the strong multiplier effect of investing in community leadership and culturally sensitive training.

Our work demonstrates that cycling is more than transport—it is a pathway to community, confidence, and belonging. By reducing people’s language and cultural barriers, Pedal United is creating a lasting network of empowered volunteers and inclusive cycling opportunities.
