Lilias Centre: Cycle Train-the-Trainer Programme
Another Way Out of Prison
Empowering Women Through Cycling
Ebike Freedom CIC, in partnership with the Lilias Centre, is delivering a Cycle Train-the-Trainer Programme that equips women in custody with the skills, confidence, and leadership opportunities to support their peers and families through cycling. Since March 2025, women at the Centre have been taking part in regular training, building not only cycling skills but also teamwork, leadership, and resilience. This peer-led approach creates a ripple effect of knowledge-sharing and confidence-building, enabling women to become role models and leaders during and after custody.
Thank you: Cycling Scotland, SPT and the National Lottery
The programme builds on the foundations laid by Cycling Scotland’s Access to Bikes, Parking and Storage Fund 2024, which provided bikes and a secure bike shed at the Centre. Together with SPT and National Lottery support, the project now ensures women have the resources, training, and mentoring to build sustainable, transferable skills that promote wellbeing, independence, and reintegration.
Stories of Transformation
The programme is already creating powerful moments of reconnection and growth for its participants:
“This is my first time on a bike after 10 years,” shared one participant.
“It reminds me of the times I cycled with my daughter,” reflected another.
“I liked the bike mechanic lesson so I can fix my bike in future,” said another woman.
These heartfelt testimonies highlight the emotional and practical impact of the programme, offering participants not only new skills but also a renewed sense of freedom and purpose.
